Bratislava is in Slovakia in Eastern Europe, near Vienna and not far from Munich, Prague and Budapest.
There is some good information about Bratislava here.
There is an airport in Bratislava and quite a few airlines fly directly there.
Flying from Ireland:
From Dublin and London Stanstead Ryanair and Skyeurope fly directly there.
Vienna airport is about 30 miles away. The airport is bigger and more international flights go through there. Bus services go from Vienna airport to Bratislava city centre. It costs about 5 euro per person each way. Aer Lingus fly from Dublin direct. There is also a catamaran that travels along the Danube from Vienna to Bratislava. It seems reasonably priced. The catamaran should be booked in advance as it seems to book out regularly. You may be able to get a cancellation if you just show up but you never know! The catamaran arrives right into Bratislava city center, close to the Novy Most.
Budapest airport is about 150 miles from Bratislava. There is a flight from Cork to Budapest, Malev Airlines. They also fly from Dublin.
Prague airport is about 4 hours by train from Bratislava. Book first class if possible. Its not much more expensive and is well worth the money, you get your own private room and lots of space to relax . There are flights from Cork and Dublin to Prague , Aer Lingus and Czech Airlines.
Coming from the USA:
Condor have a flight from Alaska to Frankfurt. It seems hard to book however and they only fly on select days. After speaking with a travel agent in Alaska they recommend booking in January or February, thats when there special offers for the summer start. You could also book Alaska to Prague. It seems easier to book even though it flys through Frankfurt!
Otherwise best to try flying into Vienna or Prague. There are more airlines flying to these locations than to Bratislava direct.
It may work cheaper to fly round trip to a major hub like London or Amsterdam and book a flight from an economy airline to the final destination (Ryanair, SkyEurope etc..). Beware
however of baggage restrictions, 33lbs per person with Ryanair. You would have to pick up your own bags in London and check into your Ryanair flight there.
